Beginnings [1]

The land that became Willington was sold by the Colony to certain men in the older towns, who sold to others, and settlers flocked in from various parts of both Connecticut and Massachusetts. It was incorporated as a town in 1727, the original name being taken from Wellington in Somersetshire, England, from which the Duke of Wellington was later to derive his title. The town was the birthplace of Jared Sparks (1789-1866) author, and president of Harvard College; it was also the birthplace of mathematician Elias Loomis (1811-1899).
