The borough is part of the Upper Perkiomen School District. The borough was incorporated in 1875 on one-third of a square mile of land taken from Marlborough Township. It is the smallest borough in the county.

While many borough homes were built circa 1836 through 1930 (median age, 1911), since the turn of the new millennium, a number of new homes have been built along Gravel Pike and Geryville Pike.
