Margate City

Atlantic County, New Jersey

Margate City Hall is located at 1 South Washington Avenue, Margate NJ 08402.
Phone: 609‑822‑2605. Originally incorporated as a borough in 1885, Margate was subsequently reincorporated as a city in 1897.

Noted for its beaches and proximity to Atlantic City, Margate is also noted for the Marven Gardens (Marvin Gardens) neighborhood of Parker Brothers' Monopoly board game fame and for Lucy the Elephant.

Marven Gardens and Lucy are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lucy was created as the promotional brainstorm of 25-year-old James Lafferty; he intended it to lure prospects to the then-uninhabited beachfront where he hoped to sell lots for vacation homes.
