Alameda as described in 1939 [1]

Built on a low, flat island separated from Oakland and the mainland by an estuary that is connected by a canal with San Leandro Bay, Alameda shares with Oakland its deep-water harbor and, on its southern and western shores, faces San Francisco Bay. On part of the former Rancho San Antonio, Alameda was settled in the early fifties [1850s] largely by Yankees. The absence of heavy fogs attracted home builders. The town's position on the bay has stimulated shipbuilding, the fishing industry, and waterborne shipping. But Alameda remains principally a residential community and the majority of its working population is employed in other bay cities and towns.
