Beginnings [1]

Incorporated from Quincy Township, July 22, 1913. John Funk was the pioneer settler in 1817, when his improvements made the place known as Funkstown. Rich deposits of iron ore were used for the Mount Alto Furnace built a mile from the town limits, on Antietam Creek. A noted health resort in the South Mountain. Seat of the Mount Alto State Sanitarium and Pennsylvania State School of Forestry. Captain John Cook of Brown's Army was captured here.
