A country four corners on State highway 472, Peacedale, originally known as Tadpole, is situated in the northern part of Elk Township about four miles southeast of Oxford. As the crossroads blacksmith and wheelwright in the 1880s, Francis Dowd had much to do with changing its name from Tadpole to Peacedale. His daughter, Emma Dowd, who had won a prize for writing a story, convinced him that Tadpole wasn't dignified enough for the home of a short story writer. He changed the name to Peacedale. [1]
