Samuel Church purchased 900 acres about 1806 and settled on the land. Along the Black Creek, he built a saw mill in 1808 and a grist mill in 1810. Church served as a Captain in the War of 1812. About 1815 a public house was opened; the same year a store was opened by Linus Pierson.

World famous suffrage movement participant, Francis Willard, was born in Churchville.
