TOWNS

In 1682 the British reorganized the "Province of New York" into 12 counties, each of which was subdivided into towns. Kings was one of these original counties, and Brooklyn was one of its original six towns. By 1896 Brooklyn had the same boundaries as Kings County.

When consolidated as part of the City of Greater New York in 1898, the NYC Charter provided for a strong mayor-council system and each Borough had an Office of Borough President created. Kings (as with the other 4 counties of NYC) has its own criminal court system, each with its own District Attorney serving as the public's prosecutor.
