Neighborhoods

The Mount Holly [†] area was first inhabited by the Catawba Nation. European settlers, primarily of German, Scotch, or Irish descent, arrived in the early 1770s. Land grants were issued by King George II around 1750, with a notable grant to James Kuykendall in 1754 for the area known as Dutchman's Creek.

In 1838, a post office was established in the area named Woodlawn.

In 1875, the town was renamed Mount Holly in honor of the Mount Holly Cotton Mill, established that year. The name was inspired by a spinning mill in Mount Holly, New Jersey, known for its yarn.

Mount Holly, incorporated in 1879, has a rich history rooted in the textile industry, which drove its early economic growth. Named after the Holly Mount Mill, the city developed along the Catawba River, leveraging water power for mills. The area transitioned from an industrial hub to a suburban residential community, attracting families and professionals due to its proximity to Charlotte.
