Lyndon [†] lies about 30 miles south of Topeka, accessible via U.S. Route 75, and is part of the Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Lyndon was founded in 1869 following the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka&Santa Fe Railroad, which spurred settlement in Osage County. Named after Lyndon, Vermont, by early settlers, the town was platted in 1870 and incorporated in 1871. Its strategic location along the railroad and proximity to the Santa Fe Trail made it a hub for trade and agriculture. By 1875, after a heated county seat dispute with Burlingame, Lyndon secured the role of Osage County seat, cemented by a Kansas Supreme Court decision. The town grew steadily, with key developments like the construction of the Osage County Courthouse in 1923, a Classical Revival structure now on the National Register of Historic Places. LyndonŐs history is tied to the regionŐs agricultural roots, surviving challenges like the 1860 drought and grasshopper invasions, and it remains a small but vital community today.
