First organized in 1844 the county was named Richardville for a Miami Indian Chief, Jean Baptise Richardville (Indian name Pechewa). The name was changed to Howard County in 1846 to honor General Tighman Howard [1797-1844] who served as a U.S. Congressman from Indiana.
