Located on Lake Michigan about 40 miles north of Chicago, Waukegan was originally known as Little Fort. It was established by French traders doing business with the Potawatomie Indians. It was selected as the seat of government for Lake County in 1841. When incorporated in 1849 the settlement had grown to include 2,500 residents. The name was changed to Waukegan in 1849, the Potawatomi word for fort or trading post. The Illinois Parallel Railroad (Chicago & Northwestern) made its way to Waukegan in 1855. Diversity and growth followed rapidly resulting in the town's re-incorporation as a full-fledged city in 1859. [History of Waukegan, www.waukeganweb.net, accessed September, 2012.

Waukegan is the hometown of iconic comedian Jack Benny [1894-1974].
