First settled in the mid-17th century, the area was designated Middlesex Parish in 1737 and incorporated as the Town of Darien in 1820. According to historians, at the time of incorporation many families contended to have the place named for themselves. Supposedly, a sailor who had traveled to Darien in Columbia (now Panama) suggested the name that was, eventually, adopted.
