Columbus [†] is a village on Route 206, five miles from Bordentown, ten miles from Trenton, eight miles from Mount Holly, and seven miles from Burlington City, at an important crossroads in Northern Burlington County. As early as 1769, the area was known as Black Horse Village, since it was the location of the Black Horse Tavern. The name was officially changed to Columbus—named for Christopher Columbus—in 1827, when the post office was established. It is said that this decision so angered the owner of the Black Horse Tavern that he refused service to anyone calling the town by its new name. The site of the original Black Horse Tavern is now the Olde Columbus Inne. The current structure was built in 1812.
