Photo: Louisiana State Capitol, Louisiana Office of Tourism, media.louisianatravel.com; tallest state capitol in the nation. Baton Rouge Parish offices are located at 222 Saint Louis Street, Baton Rouge LA 70802; phone: 225-389-3119. In 1949 voters approved a hybrid Parish-City form of government which, with very minor amendments, survives today. The "city" of Baton Rouge was expanded to include the majority of the populated area of East Baton Rouge County. Below, from the City/Parish website (www.brgov.com/aboutus.htm) provides a protracted, though clearly written history, explanation and insight into this unique political structure.. The Art Deco capitol building (photo) was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. Designed by architects Weiss, Dreyfuss & Seiferth, the structure was completed in 2 years (1930-1932); it's a 34-story steel skyscraper clad in limestone. |
