In 1949 voters approved a hybrid Parish-City form of government which, with very minor amendments, survives today. The "city" of Baton Rouge was expanded to include the majority of the populated area of East Baton Rouge County. The Art Deco capitol building (photo) was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. Designed by architects Weiss, Dreyfuss & Seiferth, the structure was completed in 2 years (1930-1932); it's a 34-story steel skyscraper clad in limestone.
