Down East is a home development started in 1957 by the Ridgeburn Corporation on Swedesford Road near Paoli. It has a name more familiar in Maine than in Chester County. The origin of "Down East" is that prevailing winds drove vessels down the coast of Maine in an easterly direction. The only reason the developers transferred the name from its historical setting is that it has a pleasant sound. [1]

Homes in the Down East neighborhood are 3-4 bedrooms, 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 baths, from 1,600 to 2,000 sqft. on lots of approximately 1/3rd of an acre. Most of the homes have a 1-car attached garage.

Entry into the neighborhood is from Swedesford Road onto Elbow Lane.
