Neighborhoods

Mamakating is said to have been named in honor of an Indian chief. Early records show the name written as Mame-Kating and Mame-Cotink. The town was incorporated in 1788, the first in Sullivan County. The first white settler was Manual Gonsalus; his tombstone is dated 1752.
