Beginnings [1]

The area was first settled around 1789 by immigrants who came from Stockbridge Massachusetts, Enos and Jared Boughton and Jacob Lobdell being among the first. Levi Boughton and Rufus Dryer settled at Boughton Hill in 1792. Hezekiah Boughton opened the first tavern at Boughton Hill in 1792. The first saw mill was built the same year by Enos and Jared Boughton. Joel Brase was the first practicing physician and William Bushnell the first permanent merchant.
