Hagaman's Mills is on the Chuctenunda Creek about 4 miles northeast of the Village of Amsterdam. Besides the "Star Hosiery Mills," it contains [in 1878] a post office, 2 churches (Methodist and Reformed), a grist mill, a saw mill, and 2 stores as well as various other industries. M. V. Herrick became proprietor of the grist and saw mills in 1875. A native of New York, he moved to Hagaman's in 1840.

The Star Hosiery Mills of H. Pawling & Son, in 1878, was the oldest establishment of its kind in the county. It was begun in 1857. The hosiery business was commenced in 1857, by Pawling and Jackson, on a small scale at first, in connection with wool carding and the manufacture of woolen goods.[1]
