Beginnings [1]

Hancock was the fourth county to be organized, 1789, with Ponobscot serving as the first county seat. It included Waldo County and extended northward to the Canadian border. The territory was once a part of the French Province of Acadia for a period of almost 200 years; France did not fully relinquish her claim until after the American Revolution. The appearance of old French settlements have been found at numerous points through the area.
