Newtown Historic District wasEstablished by ordinance in 1975, Newtown is ditinguished by residential reconstruction after the two severe fire in 1860 and 1886. The District contains fine victorian architecture and a notable example of the Federal period. Poplar Hill Mansion (117 Elizabeth Street), circa 1795, oldest surviving building in Salisbury. In the mid 1800s, the area north of Saisbury, known as Newtown, became incorporated into the city boundaries, along with an area south of the city known as Camden.
