Christopher Hyatt purchased hundreds of acres in Prince Georges County about 1807. A post office was established about 1859 with Hyatt serving as its first postmaster. The city was incorporated in 1886. From its early days Hyattsville was attractive to Washington, D.C. businessmen who purchased lots to build summer cottages and winter homes. The city today is a commuter/bedroom community for the nation's capital.
