Sparta, the county seat of Hancock County, was incorporated as a town December 3, 1805. The county courthouse, built around 1882, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sparta is the only incorporated municipality in Hancock County, which was once a cotton farming area but is now a forested area. The city is located in the central region of the state near Georgia highways 15 and 16.
