Bethel Village

Bethel is an historic village that lies at the junction of Route 501 (Lancaster Avenue) and Interstate 78 in Bethel Township. The village was laid out in 1814 by Michael Miller and contained 52 lots and an Inn. The location became a popular place for watering and resting horses on their way to Reading or the Union Canal. The name was changed from Millersburg to Bethel somewhere around 1900. Polk's 1882 Gazetteer
BETHEL. Name of post office at Millersburg, is a village of 450 inhabitants in Bethel township, Berks county, 25 miles northwest of Reading. Myerstown, Lebanon county, 8 miles south on Lebanon Valley Div. P. & R. R. R., is the shipping depot, location of nearest bank, Ex. and Tel. office, and with which Bethel has daily stage communication; fare, 50 cents. G. M. F. Rick, postmaster.
