Edgecombe was formed from Craven County in 1733 and confirmed by the North Carolina Legislature in 1741. Its name is Saxon and signifies "a valley environed with hills," and is derived from the Earl of Mount Edgecombe, who, as Naval Captain Edgecombe, had served under Admiral Byng in 1756.
