TOWNS

The Buchanan County courthouse is located at 210 5th Avenue Northeast, Independence, IA 50644; phone: 319-334-2196.

Buchanan County was organized close to July 4, 1847, Independence Day, no doubt influencing the choice of name for the county seat. It is named for James Buchanan [1791-1868] who was serving as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania at the time; Buchanan served as U.S. President from 1857-1861.
