Newton County was created in 1842 from Carroll County. It was named for attorney Thomas W. Newton. Newton was a Congressional Represenative (1846-1847). Jasper was made the county seat in 1843. County residents were moved to Springfield, MO by Union soldiers, who, while looking for confederate soldiers, burnt Jasper to the ground. After the war (during the 1880s and 90s) Jasper was rebuilt. The Buffalo River was designated a "National River" in 1972. Newton is known for its hunting, crafts, antiques, fishing, caves, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. |
