Cut by the murky Schuylkill River and bounded on the south by high hills, Port Carbon is a working-class suburb of Pottsville, with solid rows of clapboard houses. In the 1830's it shipped great cargoes of coal on the Schuylkill Canal; today [1940] it has a machine shop and two textile mills.
