Galeton is the main gateway to the hunting and fishing country in the wild Black Forest, lies tilted between the valley floor and the mountains; long flights of stone steps lead to frame houses, perched hundreds of feet above those in the valley. In the business section are sporting goods stores. Here are the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad yards, and a leather glove factory.

US 6 pierces a wild forested region, with not a dwelling for miles. Signs warning of deer crossings appear frequently; water holes and salt-licks in the forests attract much game; occasional cultivated fields are protected from wandering flora by high wire fences.
