The area was first settled around 1814; incorporated as a borough in 1900 from West Hempfield Township. MOUNTVILLE, 6.9 in. (440 alt.,954 pop.), first named Mount Pleasant, was laid out in 1854 by Isaac Rohrer, who owned iron mines in the neighborhood. The depletion of the ore at Ironville and Silver Springs, a few miles north, drove part of the population into the large cities, but the remainder stayed to plant the fields with tobacco. MOUNTVILLE. This village of 469 inabitants is on Columbia Br. Penn. R. R., in West Hempfield township, Lancaster county, 6 miles west of Lancaster, the county seat. Tobacco, live stock and grain are marketed. Ex., Adams. Tel W. U. R. M. Fridy, postmaster.
