Nockamixon is one of two Bucks County municipalities to have an Indian name (the other being Tinicum Township); it's believe the name is likely a corruption of an Indian word meaning "the place of three huts" or "the place of soft soil." Shawnee Indians inhabited the area as late as 1730. Europeans began settling here circa 1735. The township was once noted for "tulipware" pottery, as was neighboring Haycock Township. |
