Established in 1682 as one of the first divisions of Bucks County, the territory was divided into Upper and Lower in 1753. It is believed that the name is a variation of Macclesfield or Maxfield, eighteenth century names for a town in Cheshire, England. (See: Guide to Lower Makefield's Historic Landmarks)
Lower Makefield has been referred to as "Bucks County's Main Line." The township is a popular home for many New York City commuters who travel via NJ Transit or Amtrak. Either are boarded at nearby (just across the Delaware River) Hamilton or Trenton NJ train stations. Closer still is the SEPTA train station in Yardley Borough, a popular commuter conveyance to and from Center City Philadelphia.
While Philadelphia may be known as "the city of neighborhoods," in Bucks County, Lower Makefield can surely bear the label, town of residential subdivisions ... more than 120, distinct, contemporary planned developments dating back to the 1920s. Edgehill Gardens (bordering neighbor Morrisville Boro to the southeast) was the first area subdivision to incorporate street lighting and sidewalks. With all the development, Lower Makefield has managed to maintain an aggressive open space and farmland preservation posture. Nevertheless, one cannot recall in recent memory a time when a small, new developments, were not appearing in unexpected nooks and crannies throughout the township.
"All Those Residents" converge and together support a wealth of activities. Many young families (especially those relocating from the midwest) observe and comment that the area, besides being "beautiful" has so very many different "things to do." Combine that with the convenient access to New York City, Princeton, Philadelphia, Lancaster & Reading, and its hard to imagine the township will ever be anything other than a popular, desirable "living place."
