Pennsylvania Guide, 1940

BALLY, 16.5 m. (480 alt.,579 pop.), laid out in 1742 on ground owned by the Society of Jesus, was later named for the Reverend Augustin Bally, S.J., who ministered to the Roman Catholics in the surrounding territory between 1837 and 1882. Here in 1743 the Reverend Theodore Schneider, S.J., built the Chapel of St.Paul, third Catholic church in Pennsylvania. The CHURCH OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT, erected in 1827, stands on the site of the chapel. This hamlet of well-kept houses and tree-shaded streets is supported by a cabinet factory and four textile mills.
