Beginnings [1]

Until the 1890s, Clairton was almost entirely residential. A glass plant and a brickyard were established in 1892 and several years later a steel works. At the turn of the century a number of steel plants were amalgamated and a by-product coke plant was erected along the Monongahela River. It was then the largest plant of its kind in the U.S. It produces coke and a number of by-products such as benzol, coal tar, fertilizer and dyes.
