Originally the Village of Greenbush, what would become the City of Rensselaer was incorporated in 1815 and was about a square mile in area. The village charter was changed 4 times between 1815 and 1897, at which time it was incorporated as a city and the name changed to Rensselaer. The land area was extended in 1902 by the annexation of Bath Village and the western part of the Town of East Greenbush.
