Dennis Township was formed in 1826. In 1846 the entire township, except for cultivated lands, was covered with oaks, pines and cedars. There were at that time in the township 7 stores, 2 grist mills, 6 saw mills, 4 schools with 205 students, and a total population of 1,350.
