Suffolk County was established by the General Court in 1643. Its size diminished during the 1700s with the creation of Uxbridge, Worcester and Norfolk counties. The county exists as an historical geographic area. There is no county government today. The State of Massachusetts assumed all county functions in 1999.

The Edward W. Brook, Suffolk County Courthouse (probate and family court) is located at 24 New Chardon Street (between Bulfinch Place and Hawkins Street), Boston, MA 02114; phone: 617-788-8300.
